Mary E gets shafted, Bob’s next.

June 27 – July 3. Here is a mishmash of things that happened over the last few days.

The next few days we were going to be stuck in port while we waited for parts to repair Mary E.

We spent some time getting the necessary tools and parts we would need to effect repairs. We also did a grocery shopping at the local IGA. This grocery store was pretty amazing for being on a remote island. The produce was outstanding and the meats were amazing and probably the only thing on this island that’s reasonably priced.

A peculiar thing about this island is none of the roads have street signs making it extremely difficult to find things. For instance, we tried to find this laundry place called US Clean. It took three trips and several inquiries to finally find it. It was tucked away behind a huge cement wall with no sign on the building. Even the most logical entrance into the parking lot wasn’t accessible because of an unfinished roadway. Speaking of unfinished there are literally hundreds of what probably was grandiose plans for condominium complexes gone bust. This laundromat probably got a good deal on rent to locate there since this complex had many things unfinished and it certainly didn’t look like there was any intention to finish them.

There is a huge very nice Beaches Family Resort here on the island. One of the days we were looking for beach access it pointed us down this road which happened to be adjacent to the Beaches resort. It was pretty funny because here were all these nice families climbing this mega waterslide inside the compound and we were on the outside in our eggbeater car in the middle of this parking lot with broken down cars, dilapidated buildings and a huge chain link fence with razor wire and guards at the gates between us and them. I guess we were running with the natives.

Sunday here on the island, everything closes and more than on any other day we found people walking everywhere in the middle of nowhere. I mean there were no houses that we could see for miles and all of a sudden someone would walk out of this dirt roadway and start walking up the main street. We had to see at least 100 people walking aimlessly. Very very strange.

Evening entertainment is also weird here. A few times we ventured out to a bar to enjoy some of the local flavor where a band might be playing but every one of them shut down the music by 9:30 PM.

There is this one bar on the island at the Grace bay Club that boasts the longest bar in the caribbean. It is ninety feet long so we decided to go check it out. The pictures and wording in the advertisement were very misleading. It was nice but not anything like they described. Anyway the surroundings were beautiful and we had a great lunch there with Jermaine our bartender. We heard some radio ads that said this was the happening place and we thought the lighting at night would be spectacular so we got a taxi to take us there. We were so unimpressed that we called the taxi right back and asked him to take us to some fun place. He took us to the Conch Shack on the other end of the island. We had a great time partying with the natives there.

Back to the Mary E, on Monday we finally got Mike to pick up the bent shaft so he could start making the new one. We also contacted Frank and Jimmies again but this time they had a used bronze prop in stock that could be refitted to our dimensions and the price was reasonable. So Bobby ordered that. The shaft was delivered Thursday. Bobby did the necessary prep work to make sure everything would go back together much more easily than it came apart. Crazy came over that afternoon and we put the shaft and rudder back in and installed the one repaired prop on the starboard side. It was certainly a lot of work but things went pretty smoothly all things considered.

The following day Friday, the prop was delivered and crazy stopped by to install it. We fired up Mary E brought her over to the fuel dock and topped her off for the journey to the Dominican Republic tomorrow, Sat July 4th.

  1. So glad you enjoyed your fun on T&C. I know that everyone will enjoy these fun short stories. Fingers and toes crossed for no more "adventures" only fun with the locals. We love you tons and tons.

  2. I love all the new pics and G2's commentary. Carol and I are going to frame that one about your new Tiki Hats and send you each a copy. You must be soooo glad to get off that island. We hope your DR adventures are not nearly as trying. You've all earned it. Happy fourth of July!! Weather here is improving somewhat. Now it feels like May instead of April. We're off to Mac's for his annual Fourth of July party. Derek's cooking so we know the food will be good and Shauna's the bartender so we know we'll all be wasted. MB, what a place! This is the BEST. Boating blog I've ever read, so keep it coming. Good luck with the rest of the trip.

  3. So --- the crazy pirates left T&C and made it to DR with lots of bouncing around which include tossing of everything in the boat, white knuckle driving, waves over the bow (all the way over the roof) and lots of rough water but they made it. G2 will have great tales to tell and Gina will tell us all which Gods she prayed to in those waters. The arrived after dark -- so were quarentined last evening but today they plan their clean up and "repairs"(gotta wait for the blogteller to tell you about that. Well, tomorrow (Monday) they will head off to Puerto Rico. All fingers crossed for flat seas and calm winds. Love you all.

  6. Ok just got off telephone with our Pirates. Big G says they were licking their wounds yesterday so today they will lick the wounds of the Mary E. Here's their plans --- Tomorrow they plan (fingers crossed) to head out and will go to Punta Cana (DR) then on to San Juan Puerto Rico then on to St. Thomas. Now, I'm trying to change the ticket for him to fly home. If anyone has any messages for the pirates please feel free to post here or remember, you can also send them emails. Also, I'm chatting with them daily. Gary hopes to do a posting today/tonight.

  7. If you need a cold one, the DR has El Presidente beer. It's real good (if you have to drink beer)!
Hope the next legs are smooth sailing.
    Enjoy,
    Danny

  8. Hey guys, great blog! Sounds like quite an adventure. Gary, I'll look forward to having a few with you when you get back. Maura & I spent our Honeymoon in Punta Cana. Great times and be sure to get some "Mama-juana". It cures all wounds.

  10. Just chatted with our pirates again. Well, the wounds are healed (well better after the yummy dinner "sent" by G1 and the fun drinks) and the boat is back together and working. So tomorrow, they head out. Our Captain friend, Captain Morales, reminded our boaters that they need to take it slow even if the waters are calm, there are tons of "floating surprises" in the water (garbage, wood and maybe even a dingy with someone escaping?). Well, hopefully Big G will update the blog soon. BTW --- he flies back to Boston on Tuesday, July 14th, so he'll be able to ensure that those two crazies (& the palm tree) get themselves settled.

  11. Gary, Bob, Gina----
Sorry I've been so delinquent about keeping in touch. Great blog---I've been following it religiously, (Gary, you have a future as a writer)
If I didn't know you better, I'd say it was all ficion. I just can't believe the trials and tribulations the crew of the Mary E has endured. I'm not terribly certain that the Great Captain in the sky would recognize my voice, but I did my best to implore HIM to guide you safely to your destination.
Be well, my friends---can't wait to raise a glass on the altar of friendship soon.
    Chet

  12. Hi Guys ---- Well just been chatting with them. They are about 2 hours outside of Cap Cana Marina in DR. I spoke to the locals -- waters are calm coming into the marina, it's well lit and quite open. I guess it's actually owned by a Sarasota FL company. Well, they seem to be in good spirits and Verizon works again, 2 hours out and he could call me. Well, I'll let you all know when they are safe ashore and maybe the prolific one will spin us a yarn.

  15. Ok, here's a quick update. So, last night they got into port after darkness had fallen. Why you ask? Well, starboard engine decided to act up so for part of the way they travelled on one engine. (No surprise there right?) Well, after coming in in the dark, they find that the power is locked out and no one around so they had to sweat in that wonderful heat. Not sure we can be too unhappy for them with our wonderful 60's and rain here. Well today they decided stay put and make sure all was ship shape. Tomorrow off to the good ole' U.S. of A. (Puerto Rico). Hopefully they'll get to do some updates for us.
